On 8th July 2026, the U.S. government is exploring the potential use of offshore oil and gas infrastructure to support commercial space launches, spacecraft re-entry, and recovery operations. According to the published report, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has initiated a Request for Information (RFI) to assess how existing offshore platforms and other facilities on the Outer Continental Shelf could be adapted for future space-related activities. The initiative aims to improve launch capacity while utilizing offshore infrastructure more efficiently.
According to the report, BOEM is seeking industry feedback on operational practices, technical standards, safety requirements, and environmental considerations associated with offshore space infrastructure. The agency is also evaluating the feasibility of repurposing existing offshore oil and gas platforms alongside the development of new offshore facilities dedicated to commercial space operations. This initiative is intended to support the growing demand for space launches and strengthen long-term infrastructure planning.
Moreover, this announcement is important for the offshore oil and gas market because it highlights the potential diversification of offshore energy infrastructure beyond conventional oil and gas production. In addition, repurposing offshore platforms for emerging commercial applications could extend the operational value of existing assets, encourage infrastructure innovation, and create new opportunities for offshore engineering and marine services.
According to Towards Chem and Materials, the global offshore oil and gas market size was valued at USD 185.5 billion in 2025, is estimated to reach USD 200.6 billion in 2026, and is projected to reach USD 404.3 billion by 2035, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.10% over the forecast period from 2026 to 2035., driven by continued investments in offshore infrastructure, technological advancements, and the growing diversification of offshore industrial applications.
Also, this development reflects the industry's continued focus on maximizing the value of offshore assets, supporting infrastructure innovation, and expanding the role of offshore platforms in meeting future industrial and commercial requirements.
