Scanfill has launched its range of rPP (Prevented Ocean Plastic) plastic film, approved for food applications, with post-consumer recycled polypropylene (PP). The announcement was made on July 3, 2026, and the product is a response to the demand for high-quality recycled PP materials for packaging in Europe.
The film was developed to meet the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements, and includes 30% recycled PP content – a mix of post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. Scanfill provides the material at various transparency levels and in large quantities. The company claims it performs as well as virgin polypropylene and offers customers a recycled option for applications within packaging where material integrity is essential.
The recycled plastic comes from used cups that are collected in coastal zones of Southeast Asia that might otherwise end up in the seas and rivers. The product can be fully recycled and traceable, which enables the customer to know where the recycled plastic comes from. It is recycled by its supplier using an advanced recycling process and then further tested by Scanfill for safety in use for food contact.
The launch reflects a major challenge within the European post-consumer recycled plastics market by providing adequate and high-quality recycled polypropylene for high-quality packaging applications. This allows the producers of packaging to use recycled PP materials, which meet the requirements for food contact approval, and thus open up the potential for packaging uses.
The film's 30% recycled content, traceability and recyclability also help to inform packaging strategies that are oriented towards material circularity and waste reduction. The programme links waste collection with better-value materials, transforming previously used plastic cups into packaging film. The ability to be available in varying transparency grades, as well as in significant quantities, may help to further promote customer uptake of it as an alternative to virgin polypropylene.
According to Towards Chem&Materials, the Europe post-consumer recycled plastics market size was valued at USD 5.15 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 5.70 billion in 2026 to USD 14.30 billion by 2035, exhibiting a CAGR of 10.75% during the forecast period.
