In September 2026, Eni and PETRONAS have partnered to develop high-performance bio-gasoline from renewable raw materials, aiming to accelerate decarbonisation of transport. The collaboration combines Eni's proprietary Eco-fining technology with PETRONAS's expertise in sustainable fuels for advanced combustion engines to innovate beyond existing biofuel standards.
The collaboration will initially test these renewable fuels in motorsport competitions before scaling them for commercial road transport. This initiative expands their broader energy partnership, which includes joint ventures and biorefinery projects in Southeast Asia and is set to begin producing sustainable aviation fuel and other renewables.
Product Relevance in the Biofuel Enzymes Market
The Eni and PETRONAS partnership directly addresses the lack of sustainable alternatives for petrol engines by developing a commercially scalable, drop-in bio-gasoline. While the immediate application is high-performance racing fuel for motorsport mandates, the ultimate product goal is widespread consumer road use. By utilizing advanced biofuel enzymes to break down non-food biomass, the fuel achieves the high purity and energy density needed to replace fossil fuels without requiring vehicle or infrastructure modifications.
To achieve mass-market relevance, the companies are combining Eni's Ecofining™ technology with PETRONAS's supply chain infrastructure, notably at the Pengerang Biorefinery in Malaysia. This facility is scaling up to process 650,000 tonnes of renewable feedstocks annually by 2028. By transforming agricultural waste and residues into high-octane components, the product offers an essential decarbonisation pathway for the existing global passenger vehicle fleet that cannot be easily electrified.
According to Towards Chem&Materials, the global biofuel enzymes market size was valued at USD 786 million in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 843.38 million in 2026 to USD 1,590.08 million by 2035, exhibiting a CAGR of 7.30% during the forecast period.
